Drainage basin

An area of land drained by a river.

Catchment area

The area within the drainage basin.

Watershed

The edge of highland surrounding a drainage basin. It marks the boundary between two drainage basins.

Confluence

The point at which two rivers or streams join.

Tributary

A stream or smaller river which joins a larger stream or river.

Mouth

The point where the river comes to an end, usually when entering a sea.

Ground water flow

The movement of water through rocks.

Infiltration

The absorption and downward movement of water into the ground.

Interception

The capture of rainfall on buildings or by vegetation.

Stem flow

The flow of precipitation along the stem of a plant to the ground.

Surface run off

The flow of water across the surface of the ground.

Through flow

The roughly horizontal movement of water through soil.

Transpiration

The loss of moisture from vegetation.
