In the study performed by Cairney and Munsie, Parent participation in literacy learning, the relationship between parents, teachers, and the community was explored in regard to their children’s literacy development. Researchers believe that parental involvement has become a term that means different things to different people, and makes expectations between parents and teachers difficult to maintain. Cairney and Munsie believe that by using the Talk to a Literacy Learner program (TTALL) they can break down the barriers between home and school “to enable both teachers and parents to understand the way each defines, values, and uses literacy as part of cultural practices.” (Cairney & Munsie, 1995) The authors of this study aim to bring …show more content…
In the third stage selected parents from stage two would be trained to act as community tutors. These parents would train other parents as well.
According to Cairney and Munsie, their study contained 9 major themes all focused around the positive impact the study had on parents, children, and schools. Parents reported that the program positively changed the way they would interact with their children, the program offered parents new strategies, as well as new recourses and use libraries more effectively than they would have if they hadn’t participated. Parents gained a new knowledge base as heightened self esteem, as well as the children. “Children’s literacy performance levels, attitudes, and interests were affected.” (Cairney & Munsie, 1995) Within the study it had been confirmed that children had become more positive about themselves as learners, and more confident in their reading and writing. Children also developed a more sophisticated vocabulary, as well as significant gains in comprehension. The results of this study coincide well with topics we have discussed in class. In chapter 8 of the book we have been reading in class Wasik and Hendrickson both stress the importance of family involvement in a child’s literacy learning.
