The Summer Food Service Program was developed in the United States in to create healthy nutritionally balanced meals mainly for students 18 years old and younger coming from low-income households during the summer months when the School Breakfast Program and National School Lunch Program are not in session. If a student is over the age of 18, they can only participate if they have some sort of physical and/or mental disability that is keeping them within the school district. The Summer Food Service Program started forty-seven years ago in 1968 just as a small pilot program but became permanent in 1975. Meals as well as recreational and educational activities are designed for the student’s enjoyment from all fifty states. Sponsors of the Summer Food Service Program include community organizations, private nonprofit residential camps, churches, school districts, and state or local government agencies (Rodriguez 2011, p.22). All Summer Food Service Program sites must be housed in a neighborhood where 50 percent or more of the children in the area are coming from low-income families and households. For the Summer Food Service Program in 2001, nearly two hundred seventy-two million dollars was funded from the United States Department of Agriculture; just imagine how much is being funded now almost 14 years later.
