Abstract
There has been significant research on how parental involvement affects students, explanations for why parents do not get involved, and what role both schools and teachers play in creating an atmosphere conducive to parents becoming actively involved in the educational process. Parental involvement refers to a parent or family members' participation and contribution to their child's schooling. These contributions can take place in or outside of the school, with the objective of improving a child’s learning. Parental involvement at home can include activities such as helping with homework or reading with the child. Educational Inequality Another barrier prohibiting parental involvement is that, “Teachers' and school administrators' perceptions of parents' socioeconomic backgrounds influence how they interact with parents and whether or not they support or reject parent strategies of involvement” (Sanders, 2008). All too often, school personnel treat underprivileged parents from a deficit perspective, which becomes a barrier to family involvement. “Some children are worth less in the eyes of society than others” (Darling-Hammond, 1997, p. 265). Thus, “the ideology of racial inferiority has long been used in this country to justify unequal access to knowledge” (Darling-Hammond, 1997, p. 264). Student diversity, although arguably an asset in schools, is also likely to increase the difficulty of home-school partnerships. In many schools in the United States, administrators and teachers increasingly have backgrounds that are different from those of their students and families. Therefore, educators need support to adjust their interactions with students' families and communities to foster academic success (Sanders, 2008).
