Mary Shelley was was born on August 30th, 1797 in Summertown, London, United Kingdom. Mary Shelley 's mother died shortly after Mary was born. Her father was then left to care for Mary and Mary’s siblings. Mary’s mother was a famed feminist while her father was a philosopher and a political writer. In the later years of Mary shelley’s life she had three children, two sons and one daughter. Her daughter 's name was Clara, her first son 's name was Percy and her other son 's name was William. Unfortunately, one of Mary’s daughters died shortly after birth because she was born prematurely. The other two children also died at a young age while traveling. Mary’s history is evident to the novel because most of her family died and she was always unhappy. Most of Mary’s life was depressing and she always had extremely bad luck.

II. Gothic Novel A few characteristics of Gothic novels are death, decay, haunted buildings, madness, curses, monsters, and love. Gothic novels first originated in England during 1765. The word “goth” originated from a germanic tribe. Long ago the Romans thought of this tribe as uncultured and they considered this tribe to be “gothic”. Frankenstein is considered to be a gothic novel because there is a lot of mystery and the story has a presence of evil. This is also a very dark and depressing novel.
