Summary This book was a good insight on the inherent goodness of business. The basis of Grudem’s arguments is that Christians have two choices, to be pleasing to God by imitating him (Ephesians 5:1) or to displease God by sinning. Based on these two observations it seems that with just these two choices business can become good or bad. In almost every chapter Grudem defends his opinion that a given business aspect is good by appealing to the Christian calling to imitate God, in the chapter of money (chapter 6). Grudem writes “If money were evil in itself, then God would not have any. But he says, ‘The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the Lord of hosts (Hag 2:8)’” (Grudem, p.49). It does follow that if the Lord posses silver and gold they cannot be evil. I disagree, I think Christians can and should imitate God in every sense; after all didn’t God send a flood and cause all the plagues? Grudem is not blind to the abuses of business, the ways in which we idolize money and success and become gracious losing sight of the fact that we are operating with God’s stuff not ours. He regularly comments through the book on concerns to balance the view, but the real wealth of attitude-changing information come from not often talked about fact that business can in and of itself be glorifying to God. We don’t have to feel vaguely guilty about business but can use it to both glorify God while we are doing it and advance the Kingdom
